Website | Spinervals It all started back in 1992. Twenty-two year old Troy Jacobson, a top amateur triathlete and novice multisport coach began offering indoor cycling workouts weekday evenings in Baltimore area bike shops. Rapidly, his reputation grew as a tough coach who knew how to motivate cyclists to higher levels of fitness using creative interval training sessions.
After two years of conducting cycling classes every week then known as CYCLAEROBICS, Troy was approached by the leading indoor cycling trainer manufacturer, Cycle-ops Products. They heard about his program and thought that his workouts would compliment their trainers. In 1995, Cycle-ops hired Troy and several of the top cyclists in the three disciplines, Road Racing, Mountain Biking and Triathlon, to produce a cycling workout video. The World class athletes included Triathletes Greg Welch and Karen Smyers, Cyclists Tyler Hamilton and Ron Kiefel, Mountain biker Laurie Brandt and others. After spending two days filming in beautiful Beaver Creek, Colorado, the first workout video for competitive cyclists, CYCLEROBX was born! Video sales boomed and now tens of thousands of athletes throughout the world have used the original Cyclerobx video to increase their cycling fitness.
After going out on his own and establishing his industry leading online coaching service, Coach Troy started his own video production and distribution company, LifeSports, Inc. with the help of investors. In September of 1997, the first SPINERVALS CYCLING VIDEO was released to the public and day to day operations were conducted from the basement of Troy's parents house. Sales were brisk since many who had used Troy's original Cyclerobx video were ready for a new workout.
Spinervals at first experienced slow and steady growth and two new workouts were created in the spring of 1998. All profits from the new business were reinvested back into new product development and marketing as more and more serious cyclists and triathletes started seeing the benefits of doing the Spinervals workouts. Coach Troy's small business started to grow as he co-founded TriSpeed, a Baltimore based Multisport retailer, all while coaching and competing as a national caliber triathlete.
Through 1999 and 2000, several new Spinervals workouts were created. The DVD started to gain enormous popularity over VHS. By 2001, even more Spinervals product was created as cycling participation grew in the U.S. due to American domination of the Tour De France. At this time, Spinervals entered into a strategic relationship with Kurt Kinetic Trainers, a new entrant into the world of bicycle trainers and a leader in aerospace and defense contract manufacturing.
Transitioning from VHS to DVD was a huge cost and burden to Lifesports, Inc and by 2002, there were several competing and copycat products on the market. Nevertheless, Spinervals had already established itself as the leader and innovator in the category of indoor cycling workout DVD's. Competitor 'knock offs' to Spinervals fell short and the cycling consumer continued to support the development of the series by purchasing more and more.
Spinervals continued to experience organic growth without funding from outside investors and Lifesports began to produce other fitness workout DVD's, including RUNERVALS TREADMILL WORKOUTS and ULTRACONDITIONING cross training workouts. The series ballooned to over 30 DVD titles along with an international customer base in Europe and Australia/New Zealand.
2007 will be the 10th Year Anniversary for the Spinervals Cycling series. What started out as a home basement operation is now an internationally distributed product used by an estimated customer base of over 250,000 serious athletes throughout the world. Over 40 different DVD titles are now part of the Spinervals family of training DVD's and the list keeps growing!
Still a 'home grown' organization, Lifesports is a small, privately held company based in the rural suburbs of northern Maryland (Baltimore County) focused on providing value to it's customer and promoting the fitness lifestyle. At our office, you'll find a friendly, hardworking staff dedicated to helping athletes of all levels achieve their fitness goals. |
